As the smallest of the three occurring Mergansers in North America the Hooded Merganser is also the only one to be completely confined to this continent.  These unique diving ducks are clumsy but quick flyers as they take off by running on the water.  You can also see this diver in its exceptional form of landing by “skiing” the water in order to slow itself down to a complete stop.  Although this waterfowl may be a bit clumsy at times it is a great diver and it can actually change the refractive properties of its eyes to enhance its underwater vision to help its feeding habits.
